Basic Caregiver (Activities of Daily Living Assistant) Training

Course title: Provide Assistance with Activities of Daily Living to the Elderly or Disabled.

What is the purpose of the course?

This training program will provide those who successfully complete the course with the necessary skills to safely provide basic assistance with the activities of daily living to frail, disabled or infirm persons who do not require more intensive assistance and supervision. The learner is encouraged to develop an entrepreneurial spirit though using these skills as a means of generating a source of income for themselves.

What is ADL’s?

ADL is an acronym for “Activities of Daily Living”.

What is an ADL Assistant?

An ADL Assistant is a care-giver who helps an elderly or physically challenged person cope with the areas of basic daily life that they can no longer cope with on their own. These areas include assistance with toileting, bathing, dressing, feeding themselves etc.
The course has been designed to teach learners how to help people who are still mentally sound but who have become too physically frail or disabled to manage these aspects of their daily life. The ADL Assistant is the person that allows their clients to continue leading relatively independent lives while providing their clients with help in the areas where it’s needed.

Who becomes an ADL Assistant?

The kind of person that becomes an ADL Assistant is usually someone with a deep-seated passion to care for others. Many who become ADL Assistants seek, (or sought), to become fully qualified care-workers or even progress onward to become nursing assistants or nurses, but they have not had the opportunities that would’ve allowed them to achieve those goals.
Others do not really choose this path for themselves, rather, this path chooses them. Such instances might include; domestic worker who finds themselves having to help their employer with ADLs, or a family member who finds themselves caring for someone in their family.
Internationally, some countries offer ADL Assistants as a service to the citizens who need them. These ADL Assistants are usually paid by the state, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland are 2 such examples.

What will I learn on the ADL Assistant Course?

The training is divided into sections covering:

• Safety aspects.
• Procedure for the ADL assessment of a client/patient.
• Assessment of available facilities and equipment needed for the care of the client/patient.
• Basic Care Procedures related to ADLs including assisting with aspects of patient’s personal hygiene, procedures for basic care equipment use, procedures for basic incontinence management.    
• Nutrition.
• Theoretical elements of safe food handling and healthy cooking practices.
• Selected aspects of medication management.

This course is suited to learners who hold an education qualification in English literacy and basic numeracy equivalent to NQF level 2 – 3 (Grade 10 – 11), to be able to easily cope with the training.

What is the course duration?

We offer a distance/online hybrid for the ADL Assistant training programme. The distance/online course will also run for a 4-week period once you have been granted access to our e-learning platform. The e-learning platform will guide you through the theoretical and practical elements of the training programme. Additionally, (if you need further assistance), you will be able to arrange online training sessions with your facilitator. Facilitated online training sessions are usually arranged into one-hour training blocks in order to address any sticking points that you may encounter in the training.
There is an additional experiential phase course requirement of 2 days, where learners will need to practice the skills that they’ve learned during the facilitated training sessions. This experiential phase is conducted in the learner’s own time and through the learner’s own arrangements. The experiential phase must be fully completed before the learner submits their Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) back to us for assessment.

Does the learner get a certificate if they successfully complete the course?

Yes. All learners who successfully meet the criteria laid down in the course outcomes will receive a certificate.
Additionally, successful learners will also receive a course transcript, (which details the marks that they achieved for each subject), along with the certificate. The transcript is an important document that should be safeguarded. It provides helpful information about the learner’s achievements to prospective employers, clients and other learning institutions.
C3 Training’s certificates are printed by contracted printers and will take a bit of time to get back to us. We will inform the learner as soon as their certificate and transcripts are ready for collection.

Who else gets to see the learner’s results?

In terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act; we may only share learner results as is necessary for us to provide our services to the learner. Our staff and contractors will handle all learner information as per the act.
We are not permitted to pass learner information onto any person, (other than the learner), without the learner’s express permission. If there are other stakeholders in the learner’s training achievements, (such as an employer who is paying for the training), the learner will need to sign an information release before we can supply any information to the 3rd party.
An information release form will be provided to the learner wherein they will designate all 3rd parties to whom we may release information regarding the learner’s results.
